AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST, we believe that it is essential to deepen our understanding of God, the Bible, and God’s will for our lives. One of the best ways to do this is through classes, small groups and Bible studies. We offer many opportunities for these throughout the week.


Sunday Morning Small Groups

Adult Life Small GroupsContemporary Christianity

Age group: Adults of all ages
This group is comprised of adults of varied religious and professional backgrounds, ages, and marital status.  The class has lively discussions on books, theological topics, and current issues of the day.

Covenant Class

Age group: Adults, ages 40+
Through Bible study and open sharing among the class members, this class tries to grow stronger spiritually and to recognize how they are expected to best serve Christ in their lives.   This is a fun-loving group, and they also enjoy annual events outside of class such as Vespers and a May brunch.

FaithLINK Class

Age group: Adults of all ages
This class is for adults of all ages who want to apply their United Methodist beliefs to current faith issues and world events. Discussions weave in scripture, Biblical thought, theological discussions, and personal reflections.

Latecomers

Age group: Adults, 60+
This is a Bible study group which relates its teachings to everyday life. They also have studies of other religions and philosophies to compare their teachings to that of Christianity.  Also, the class will often do a book study for several weeks.


Monday Small Groups

United Methodist Women (UMW)

Age group: Women of all ages
Miriam: 1st Monday of the month at 9:30 am
Ruth: 3rd Monday at 1:30 pm
The organized unit of United Methodist Women is a global community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Our church is very active and has four circles that meet once a month individually. Four times a year all four circles come together to socialize as well as to participate in devotions, installation or officers, etc. Our circles are Hope; Mary & Martha; Miriam and Ruth.

Scraps & Prayers

Age group: Adults of all ages
2nd Monday of the month at 5:30 pm
This small group has a brief devotion, sharing time and prayer together, and then they create a special project of cards, paper crafts, home décor projects and more. There is a $15 fee that includes all the materials used in the class.

Bibles, Books, and Bagels

Age group: Adults of all ages
4th Monday of the month at 5:30 pm
Once a month this group meets at Panera in Decatur to discuss a book that they’ve read over the past month. Lots of deep discussions … and lots of laughter as well. Every month brings a new title to read.


Tuesday Small Groups

Aspiring Marys

Age group: Women of all ages
Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m.
This is a group of women who read and discuss a faith-related book. The group discusses points made by the author and answers questions (and raises even more questions). Our discussions are thought-provoking but yet, we have lots of laughs.

Prayer Shawl

Age group: Adults of all ages
Second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 9:00 a.m.
The purpose of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is to knit or crochet God’s love, care, and warmth into every stitch of the shawls created for people in need. This group meets twice a month to knit & crochet shawls that are then blessed and taken to people in need of some extra prayer and comfort.

Wednesday Small Groups

Early Mornings

Age group: Adults of all ages
Wednesdays from August to May at 7 a.m.
If early mornings are your thing, then this may be the Bible study for you!  This group meets at The Decatur Club at 7 a.m. every Wednesday morning.  Over breakfast and coffee, this small group reads a section of a book in the Bible and then discusses the meaning of it.

Strong For Life (a senior exercise program)

Age group: Adults, seniors
Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
On Wednesday mornings at 10:30 AM our Strong for Life group meets in the Susannah Wesley Room for 35 minutes of a strengthening program designed by Physical Therapists for use by older adults (sixty and above) to improve strength, balance, and overall health.
This program uses a 35-minute videotape consisting of a warm-up, strengthening exercise using Thera-bands, and a cool down.

Green Team

Age group: All ages are welcome
First Wednesday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
This small group believes that caring for our planet lies at the foundation of our faith. We work within and beyond our church to live out God’s call to sustainability. Come help us make a difference!

Wednesday Night Dinners

Age group:  All ages are welcome
From mid-September through mid-November and again from mid-January to late April, we have a meal together at 5:30.  A potluck begins and ends each semester, with a provided meal on most Wednesdays in between.  The suggested cost is $5/person and no more than $15/family.

MidWeek Ministries

Age group:  All ages are welcome
From mid-September through mid-November and again from mid-January to late April, we have small groups/classes following a meal.  Each semester we have three or four classes that run 6-8 weeks long and are led by various members of our staff and/or congregation.


Thursday Small Groups

Quilters

Age group: Adults of all ages
Every Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
This group of quilters meets weekly in the church building where they enjoy good fellowship and quilting all morning long. Coffee, quilting and good friends. Newcomers are always welcome and encouraged!

Slow ‘n’ Easy

Age group: Adults of all ages
Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
From September through mid-May, this small group reads a section of a book in the Bible in class and then discusses the meaning of it. Members add their understanding of the passage and raise questions for further discussion. We have lots of laughs, but we still have meaningful discussions.

Sojourners

Age group: Adults of all ages
First Thursday of the month at 12 p.m.
This small group meets monthly to discuss the latest Sojourners Magazine. Sojourners brings together faith, justice and action and discusses how these inform and speak to situations around the world. It’s like reading the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other and having a conversation between the two.

First Friends

Age group: Adults, 50+
Fourth Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m.
First Friends is a social group that is open to members and non-members alike. Each month there is a speaker with a discussion afterward. Refreshments are served. There is no fee to attend, but free-will donations are accepted to cover the cost of the refreshments. Bring a friend with you!
